Walter Ricks Memorial

Once again time has claimed another of our dance friends.  Walter Ricks competed in events all around the country, predominately in Masters Divisions.  He was a personal friend & photographer for Skippy Blair, attended our NYE event every year and had it scheduled again already for this year, but sadly he passed away at home this Fri, he was recovering from cancer of the bladder surgery.

He was a really nice person, awesome dancer, and will truly be missed.

We’re taking a poll.

We’ve added a new feature to our website: Polls.  We’ve done this reach out to the community and find out what is the majority.  What type of music do you like?  What is your style of dancing?  When learning to west coast swing, what aspect do you find more interesting?  We encourage you to place a vote as it is completely annonimous and we don’t ask for any additional information other than your vote.  We hope to be able to use these results to better shape your weekly dance lessons, events and overall experience.  Nothing brings us more joy on the dance floor than looking at our dance partner and seeing a big smile.  So please participate with your vote and we’ll work to come up with new polling topics on a weekly or monthly basis.  Check back often

Contributing Author

Who is Mark Traynor

Mark has been involved with the Dance Industry in every capacity for over 31 years. Since concentrating primarily upon West Coast Swing (WCS) for the past 20 years he has helped establish many techniques now being taught and used throughout the WCS circuit nationwide. Because he has never been a competitor on the circuit it took some time for his Floorplay concepts to spread and take hold across the nationwide West Coast community but now can be seen and are used everywhere by dancers and instructors alike, possibly without ever knowing where they originated. WCS Level 3 – BREAKS CLASS – Tues. 10/27

Hello Dancers
This is it! It’s Playtime

There will be no review this week as we dedicate the whole class to ‘hitting the breaks’, how to do it, what to do when they happen and a bit about ‘musicality’, which is recognizing the music we dance WITH, not TO.  Even if you only know the 5 basic steps and have missed ‘playtime’ you can pick up the material we will cover here. Hope you can join us.
We will have a complete review and class party next week. Read more ›

The FloorPlay Swing Shift: The Story

I recently was exposed to a ‘West Coast Swing Mixer Dance’ idea by Bobby Caudill of Tampa. This is a concept that hundreds of dancers around the country have probably thought about at sometime but never took the time to develop. Well, the time has come!

After studying his original step pattern for the mixer, I felt that while the concept was long overdue for our West Coast world, it should be a 32 (not 34) beat ‘phrased’ pattern, the ladies should be able to move around the floor and the partner transition should be much smoother than it was. Like any mixer or even line dance, these elements are essential for any potential growth and continued participation by the dancers to stay interested. So, I made a few minor adjustments to hopefully help the concept become the future popular dance that could help attract many new dancers to our ever growing West Coast Swing Community. Read more ›
